A5 Re-surfacing works

A5 resurfacing works

I’m writing to inform you of some upcoming essential maintenance work on the A5 between Tove roundabout and Gibbet Island. As part of this work, we’ll carry out resurfacing, renewal of road markings and replacing road studs to provide a smoother, safer carriageway for road users.

When will this work take place?

We’ll be working overnight, from 21 October 2024 to 1 November 2024, 8pm to 6am Monday to Friday.

To complete our work safely, we’ll install full overnight closures of the A5 between Crick and Shawell (3 nights), followed by Weedon Bec to Crick (2 nights) and a final phase from Tove/Towcester roundabout to Weedon Bec. (2 nights).

What does this mean for you?

Help your Hedgehogs!

Winter is coming – and this may mean that some hedgehogs who have not been able to find the right kind of food over the last few months may be underweight and struggling.

How do I know if a hedgehog is in trouble?

  • It’s out in the day time – slow moving hedgehogs in the daytime are not normal
  • It is not moving well – a sluggish or wobbly hedgehog in the open
  • There are a flies buzzing around it – may indicate it is ill
  • Small young hedgehogs out by themselves – may have lost their mother and need help

How can I help?

If you have found a hedgehog who looks to need rescuing there are some immediate things you can do to help:

  • Use gardening gloves or a folded towel to collect it up, bring it indoors and put it in a high-sided box with an old towel or fleece in the bottom for the hedgehog to hide under.
  • Fill a hot water bottle so that when it is wrapped in a towel there is a nice gentle heat coming through and put that in the bottom of the box with the hedgehog, ensuring it has room to get off the bottle should it get too warm. Make sure the bottle is always kept warm (if allowed to go cold it will chill the hedgehog and do more harm than good). During particularly hot weather providing heat may not be necessary.
  • Put the box somewhere quiet.
  • Offer meaty cat or dog food and fresh water

These steps will help the hedgehog warm up and give it the opportunity to stabilise.

2024 Crime and Community Survey launched

2024 Crime and Community Survey

Today sees the launch of our annual survey looking at your experience of crime and your connection to your local community. The data from the survey goes into a report which we publish on the website, and use to help prioritise our work.

This year we’re working with academic staff at the University of Northumbria who have provided some optional questions at the end of the survey related to health. This is linked to their studies on fear of crime and health outcomes.

The survey takes about ten minutes to complete, and if you can spare the time, we really hope that you will make your views known to us – it really is appreciated!

Helping our residents to stop smoking with free support

The start of October marks Stoptober, a national campaign which encourages people to quit smoking for good.
Smoking remains the biggest behavioural cause of preventable death, with 64,000 deaths a year and quitting is one of the best things a smoker can do for their health. If you quit for 28 days, you’re five times more likely to quit for good. That is why West Northamptonshire Council will be hosting events out in the local community to encourage people across the area to join thousands of others who are committing to quitting this October.

People across West Northamptonshire can access free support through the Council’s Stop Smoking Service. There is a wide-range of support including a 12-week course with sessions either on the telephone or face-face, as well additional support with e-cigarettes and nicotine replacement therapy which can be delivered straight your door. If you’d like to speak to someone about support this Stoptober join one of the drop in sessions at:

  • Friday 4 October 9am – 4pm at Weston Favell shopping centre, outside Costa
  • Tuesday 8 October 9am – 4pm at Grosvenor Shopping centre, outside River Island on the ground floor
  • Thursday 10 October 9am – 4pm at Northampton General Hospital at the South Entrance outside Marks & Spencer

Cllr Matt Golby, Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Adult Care, Public Health and Regulatory Services said: “When you stop smoking good things can start to happen, within days or weeks you have more energy, and your senses of taste and smell improve. Not only this, but quitting could save the average smoker £2,000 per year. Quitting this autumn could ease financial pressures and you could see significant improvements to physical and mental health.

“If you’ve quit before, or are looking to save money and improve your wellbeing – I’d encourage you to reach out to our stop smoking service to find out more about the free support we can offer to help you quit for good.”

To find out more information please visit www.westnorthants.gov.uk/stopsmoking or you can get in touch with the service today on 0300 126 5700.

Kilsby Speedwatch Campaign

Kilsby Speedwatch Campaign

Northamptonshire Police run Speedwatch to help villages reduce the speed of traffic travelling along their road networks. Due to Covid 19 it has not been possible for Speedwatch to run during 2020 and 2021 but the Police plan to get the scheme up and running again in 2022.

The campaign only lasts for 3 weeks in the year and volunteers are needed to work with the Police to monitor speeds of vehicles, at certain points, within Kilsby. The main aim of the Campaign is to re-educate people regarding speeds within the village. The main aim of this is to keep people and their families safe.

The Aims of Community Speed Watch

To reduce excessive speed in Northamptonshire parishes within 30mph limits • To change people’s attitudes towards speeding • To create a safer environment • To empower communities to work together in partnership with road safety agencies.

Your help is only needed for 3 weeks to monitor speed levels

The Benefits the Parish will receive

• Increased awareness of the dangers of speeding • Loan of a hand-held speed gun for use by trained residents • Comprehensive equipment and safety training, site assessments, high visibility clothing, insurance cover and publicity materials • High visibility Community Speed Watch poster boards to put up on lamp-posts/trees • Regular follow-up visits and continued support from Northamptonshire Police • Follow-up support using portable speed indicator devices and vehicle activated signs • Feedback of all recorded data to form an evidence base to support any potential future funding applications • A safer environment and an empowered community.

Speeding is a serious issue for Northamptonshire’s parishes but it is not an inevitable one. Community Speed Watch is a positive and proactive way in which local residents can work together to tackle this important issue.

What is involved?

We will need someone to act as Co-ordinator,

and

Volunteers: You will work alongside other trained residents during roadside enforcement sessions, using the speed detection equipment and recording vehicle details for offending vehicles. We need between 6-10 volunteers to create a team rota.

What Training is required?

All volunteers need to be trained before they can attend any roadside sessions. The training is a 3 hour session which consists of both practical and classroom elements; this normally takes place 1-2 weeks before you are due to get the equipment. Once you are trained you are covered by a form of insurance whilst you are volunteering for Community Speed Watch. There is currently no requirement for you to repeat this training each year, however refresher training is welcomed.

At this stage, it would be helpful if people would indicate that they are willing to participate.

Please email the Parish Clerk clerk@kilsby-pc.gov.uk

if you are prepared to help with this.

The more volunteers we get the safer our Village will be for everyone.

Northamptonshire Talking

Northamptonshire Talking – Police Community Messaging Service

The Northamptonshire Police community messaging service, which provides a simple and convenient way for local people to receive news and updates about crime and policing in their area, has been relaunched under a new name, Northamptonshire Talking.

Previously known as Northamptonshire Neighbourhood Alert, the new-look Northamptonshire Talking offers local residents the opportunity to get connected with what’s happening in their local area, stay up to date about crime and policing issues, and get involved in shaping local policing priorities.

Residents who were already signed up to Neighbourhood Alert need do nothing – their accounts will automatically transfer to the new service and they will continue to receive the same message choices. Those wishing to sign up to Northamptonshire Talking should go to the website, www.northamptonshiretalking.co.uk and select the Sign Up tag. The process also offers the option to join the Neighbourhood Watch scheme for Kilsby (designation D90) of which 100 Kilsby residents are already members.
